Common Pests
Some of the most common pests we are called upon to deal with in business premises include bed bugs, rats, mice and cockroaches. These, along with other common insects and rodents can affect a wide range of buildings.
Bed Bugs
This is one pest definitely on the increase, the reason generally being because of the increase in travel worldwide that takes place nowadays.
Bed bugs are a serious nuisance and require thorough treatment. In the course of some ten minutes an adult bed bug will ingest seven times its own weight in blood. It will then go to its hiding place, digest the blood meal, mate and lay more eggs.
A female bed bug can lay 200 eggs at a rate of 4 – 5 per day, but the actual number laid depends upon the temperature, they do not lay any eggs at temperatures below 10 degrees centigrade.
Bed bugs are extremely unpleasant and can cause irritation; any treatment will usually involve several visits and a thorough dose of insecticide each time in all relevant places.
One of the most concerning instances of bed bugs dealt with was in a hotel of some 30 plus rooms. Various rooms had instances of bed bugs on the walls and ceilings. Several people had been bitten; the embarrassment and potential loss of customers was serious. Rather then pick and choose and only treat the rooms showing problems, I treated the whole premises, perimeter, cracks and crevices, treatment to all rooms and corridors; doses of insecticide behind beds and pictures over several visits. The dead insects were visible on the second visit I made but more insecticide was placed until no more evidence was seen or causing distress to customers. A professional bed bug treatment is not cheap, or should not be! Bed bug treatment must be thorough and repetitive
Cockroaches
Although having dealt with cockroaches on a domestic / residential basis they are far more likely to be encountered within a commercial environment, after causing great embarrassment, loss of earnings and the possible cause of closure to a catering establishment.
This pest is not dealt with as a one off visit. The size and extent of infestation should be ascertained with monitoring traps, the appropriate insecticide used thoroughly to the perimeters or rooms, cracks and crevices etc., follow up treatments are essential until the problem is cured. Constant cleanliness is essential to the inside and outside of a building. This pest enjoys filthy conditions and they are a disease hazard.
On one occasion I was called to a restaurant where cockroaches ran all over the kitchen floor, amongst cooking utensils, chopping boards and around previously prepared food. The problem here was already well established and should have been dealt with much earlier. However treatment took place using the methods mentioned and subsequent visits made at timed intervals. The problem was solved at considerable expense to the owners, but it was money well spent.
No business dealing with food in any way can afford to let this pest slip by and develop out of control.
Mice
Mice are dealt with most every week of the year in many different property’s and places of work.
They are dealt with when indoors and not deliberately targeted in a garden as rats might be. The prevalence of mice makes garden baiting a lost cause.
Every pest controller dealing with mice will normally look at the attic regardless of any other areas the householder may be concerned about. The attic should always be viewed. If this is left out then the treatment will probably not be successfully concluded.
Where as rats are neophobic (wary of new objects). Mice are neophile, they enjoy investigating new objects and are fairly easy to deal with as long as bait of significant worth and amount is placed at intervals throughout the affected area.
Most rodent activity will be found in the Autumn / Winter, but incidences of mice and rats will occur during the rest of the year.
The significant concern with mice is the speed at which electrical wiring may be chewed, I myself on occasion have been called to properties following small fires caused by the actions of mice, with apparently no one being aware of their presence until the worst happened. Holiday homes/lets are particularly susceptible, having sporadic occupation.
Over the years many alarm systems, terminals etc. have been eaten by mice, generally speaking as soon as something is heard and/or small black droppings are found then act upon it.
Mouse traps have been around a long time and are useful for dealing with the occasional visitor in a garage or shed, but as with rats, poison is the only realistic option.
A good pest controller will have an array of baits in differing forms and should be able to gain control for the home owner fairly quickly.
As mentioned mice are a commonly dealt with pests and have been found in many different situations over the years, on one notable occasion I was called to a church, the church organ was no longer making the appropriate sounds as mice had eaten the leather ‘stop’ within. This was somewhat unique, yet by placing a suitable bait within damage was stopped, expensive damage at that.
Another occasion saw damage being done to parked cars at a car showroom notably to the electrics as the vehicles were stationary for most of the time. I was able to place baits within the engine bays and get quick results, saving the garage a lot of trouble and cost.
There is currently an array of poisons available to the public from different outlets, usually in small packets and always of a weak form so as to be suitable to sell for ‘amateur use’.
A pest controller has something better available in differing forms and sensible quantities and rodents should never be under-baited. Once they have taken sufficient quantities of bait, time is all that’s needed to see an end to the problem.
Rats
These are the number one public health pest and should be dealt with as soon as found, they are impressive opportunists and subject to a lot of ridiculous myths and notions.
Over nearly thirty years I have dealt with thousands of rat infestations covering many situations, undoubtedly some stick in the memory.
Most domestic call-outs for rats follow a sighting of them in the garden, although of course they do enter houses, particularly attics, but nowhere near as frequently as mice.
The prescence of a well stocked bird table will attract and hold them in an area, if water is nearby then a problem can develop as rats may ‘dig in’ and produce their own burrow system on or near the premises. Compost bins are another attraction.
On one occasion I was called out to deal with a hotel undergoing refurbishments and was asked to view a basement area as rats were thought to be present, they certainly were present and this basement area had been neglected while all efforts of improvement were going on elsewhere.
This area held a number of rats although it should be borne in mind that they are not found in the hundreds of animals scale rather a small colony (family).
This basement area smelt bad, there were droppings everywhere and a lot of damage to floors and skirting boards following initial heavy baiting and several follow-up visits using good quality rodenticide, results were attained. Holes in the outside wall were filled and made good and all finally settled. The costs and time involved would have been significantly less if I had been called sooner, clearly the rats had been present for some time.
Poison is in reality the only option, while some people advocate the use of traps the chances of eradicating an infestation are remote.
Another particular case saw rats running around a rear garden and feeding on and beneath a bird table and entering and foraging across several neighbouring gardens as is often the case. They had dug a burrow system directly beneath the bird table so clearly there was a standing stock on site, rats will also shelter beneath piles of wood and rubbish, sheds etc. but if a ‘burrow system’ is on site then they have really set up home.
Several visits here using approved bait containers for exterior use while the home owner removed all bird food for the duration, saw a positive result shortly afterwards.
